Sad to see that Newsweek is up for sale with no guarantee that anyone will buy it and keep it alive. I was a Newsweek Bonn and London bureau chief in the 1970s, and respected it for in-depth, long-form journalism, and for tackling difficult subjects such as racism in America. I don’t know why the magazine went into a tailspin. Perhaps its editors didn’t adapt to changing circumstances, especially mobile platforms and the Internet. Perhaps the magazine took too liberal a stance. Or perhaps the economic downturn came when the magazine was too fragile to weather the storm, as advertisers fled. Whatever the reason, if Newsweek dies a bit of American journalism will die with it.
